Bike friends -

Please see the message below for another opportunity to help out with the
Be Bright campaign - a chance to educate campus bicyclists about the
importance of using lights at night and also distribute lights to those
that don't have them.

[Personal opinion: They should also be doing some media/social
media/outreach coverage BEFORE the campaign. I don't like how people see
this as a "light giveaway," and there never seems to be any enforcement
after these isolated evenings in the fall. I've seen far too many close
calls myself to be complacent about people riding without lights.]

As you can see, we know the time and date of the volunteer opportunity, but
not the location, but it will be somewhere in the central/east campus area.
(I think "lower campus" means southern area, like maybe the SW path,
Dayton, or Union South area, but not sure.)

If you email me, I'll let you know when final details emerge.

Thanks in advance!

Robbie Webber

Subject: Be Bright/volunteers needed!

Good morning!

UWPD received a grant from the Dane County Bike Association to purchase and
distribute bike light sets to those bicyclists not having appropriate
lighting. We have 80 light sets and I would like to do two events, giving
away 40 lights each night. I have picked Wednesday, September 25 and
Wednesday, October 2 as the nights. The time is roughly 7:30-9:00pm,
depending on sunset, etc. We will do one event in the lower campus area
and one in the southeast area. The locations will not be made public, as I
don't want students showing up to get a free light because they read/heard
it somewhere.

The plan is that the light sets will be ready in advance (let me know if
you want to help with this). On the night of the event an officer will
stop a violator and do appropriate education. While the bicyclist is being
educated a volunteer (any of you or people you know) will be installing the
light sets (front and rear). Tools needed is screwdrivers and flathead
screwdrivers. We will have some, but if volunteers have their own to bring
and use them-self that would be great.

Please let me know if you are interested in helping and/or have any
questions. Thank you for helping to make this a successful event!

Kristin
