This article and picture does show something I really wish we could achieve
here in Madison. I believe we could get better biker awareness by committing to
paint bike lanes and stops with a single, CONSISTENT color, preferable a bright
green. Many of the pedestrian crosswalks now are red, which I believe inspires
caution and improves both awareness and safety. This is a fairly simple thing
to make a big difference.

There are a lot of different conversations to
have around this, but as a
starting point I would assert that relying on a
shared lane (with sharrows
or super sharrows or no sharrows at all) to
accommodate cyclists on a
4-lane boulevard and posted speed of 30 mph is
inappropriate.

*"Because of the competing demands of all these users and
constituencies,
says Jason Patton, Oakland?s bicycle and pedestrian program
manager, it
proved impossible to create a dedicated bike lane on this stretch
of 40th
Street, despite three different attempts to do so."*

Translation:
We (city staff, political leaders, residents) couldn't bring
ourselves to
remove parking or MV throughput in order to safely and
comfortably accommodate
people riding on bikes.
