Subject: Board of Public Works: In support of a bicycle contra flow lane on
Mifflin Street

Hello Board of Public Works members,

I would like to voice my support for a bicycle contra flow lane on Mifflin
Street, on Capitol Square.

This facility is clearly needed. With busy bicycle corridors flanking the
Square on State Street and East Mifflin, we see significant numbers of
people bicycling across the Square west to east on the Mifflin Street
sidewalks.

We can say people should dismount or bike around the Square. But we all
know that transportation behavior is like water flowing downhill. Good
design follows usage. In general, bicycling downtown is something we want
to encourage due to motor vehicle congestion and parking capacity issues.
We just need facilities that enable all users to share the street safely
and harmoniously all around.

Cities all over the US are expanding

their
networks of protected bike lanes to enhance their downtowns. Madison should
too!

Thank you,
Peter Gray
