I agree that the volunteer beer thing is absurd; no sampling during, and they give you one can (not a six pack or four pack, one can) to go afterward. But I signed up a while back, and also recruited a bunch of MHTGers, that accounted for much of the closing the gap from 30 volunteers needed at an earlier call for volunteers to the 17 now needed.
