Pressing <space> on these folders instead of <enter> does make mutt print "Getting folder list" at the bottom, but mutt goes no further.

Get a protocol dump of this, so we can see what's going on.

When hitting enter on the folder, I am presented with a window with [=foldername] at the top, but only an:

IMAP                          ../

line in every folder view.

This is an issue with Mutt's IMAP support. Basically, mutt relies on the CHILDREN extension, and Binc doesn't support it. But if you just use the space-bar instead of the return key, that should work (see above).
