1. PostgreSQL 8.4 has been EOL for over two years. Newer versions do not only receive bugfixes, but they have improvements in terms of performance and concurrency. https://www.postgresql.org/support/versioning/ 2. Make sure your schema is sane and indexed for your use case. 3. Check your configuration - in your case, the most important setting is "shared_buffers", followed by "work_mem". 4.
