I’m not judging but it sounds like to me what you are really describing is PTSD from installing Windows 7 and “upgrading” it to Windows 10.
:D I too use Microsoft products but for infrastructure services facing the open Internet (like DNS) I only use BIND running on FreeBSD. Not knowing exactly what you are trying to accomplish, I think if you were take one of those Core2 systems and install PfSense on it you would be very pleased.
