Dear all,

It is with sadness that I report the death of Ron Kettle, former curator of the
British Library’s collection of wildlife sound recordings. Ron died peacefully
yesterday morning at the age of 91 but leaves behind him a huge legacy in the
form of one of the largest and most comprehensive archives of wildlife
vocalisations in the world.

Ron was curator of the collection for 16 years before handing over the mantle
to Richard Ranft in 1988. Under Ron’s leadership, the collection grew from a
few hundred recordings to tens of thousands. He raised the profile of the
collection both in the UK and abroad by writing articles and compiling
discographies, broadened its appeal & visibility by launching a series of audio
publications and founded the journal Bioacoustics.

I’m sure all of you who knew Ron will join us in expressing our condolences to
his family at this time.

Best wishes

Cheryl
