The ICBI's 7th Annual Big Data in Biomedicine Symposium will be held
on *Friday,
October 26, 2018 *at the Georgetown University Conference Center.

*We are also delighted to offer three workshops on October 25th: *

   - *"Bioinformatics for Immuno-Oncology and Translational Research"*
presented
by Dr. Yuriy Gusev. Workshop will be from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at 2115
Wisconsin Ave. NW, Suite 106 Washington, DC 20007 (spaces limited -
   workshop registration required).
   - *"High Dimensional Data Visualization & Analysis in R"* presented by
Dr. Simina Boca and Dr. Matthew McCoy. Workshop will be from 10:00 am -
1:00 pm at 2115 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Suite 106, Washington, DC 20007 (spaces
   limited - workshop registration required).
   - *"EHR Data access and analysis" *presented by Dr. Ian Brooks, PhD and
Mr. Stephen Fernandez, MPH. Workshop will be from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at
2115 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Suite 106 Washington, DC 20007 (spaces limited -
   workshop registration required).

*The workshops are scheduled for Thursday, Oct 25th - Location: ICBI
Conference Room, Georgetown University: 2115 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 106.
Washington DC.*

*Short description:*

*1. Bioinformatics for Immuno-Oncology and Translational Research:*
In this workshop, we will review major applications of Big Data,
bioinformatics and systems biology for immuno-oncology research and
development with major focus on translational research. We will provide a
brief use'rs guide to open access on-line immuno-informatics resources and
tools as well as overview of state of the art methodologies and approaches
to utilizing a vast amount of information available through genome
wide molecular
profiling, next-generation sequencing, etc. Several case studies and brief
live demos will be presented to illustrate the importance and added value
of bioinformatics tools and resources for immuno-oncology.

*Specific topics to be covered*:

Bioinformatics for Immuno-Oncology and Translational Research

   - Overview of major applications of bioinformatics methodology in
   immuno-oncology
   - Open Access Bioinformatics Resources: online databases and tools that
   are available for immuno-oncology research
   - Case-studies for bioinformatics analysis in human cancers with
   immunology applications
   - Short live demo of online resources and tools
   - Future directions for immuno-oncology informatics

*Instructor: *
The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Yuriy Gusev, PhD. Associate Professor
at ICBI, Georgetown University.

For more information please contact Dr. Gusev at: [email protected].

*2. High Dimensional Data Visualization and Analysis in R:*

In this workshop participants will be shown the nuts and bolts of a high
dimensional data analysis in R. They will reproduce an analysis of
metabolomics data, applied to a study of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In
particular, they will learn principles of data exploration, visualization
(including principal components analysis), model fitting, and reproducible
research. Participants should bring a laptop in order to follow along.
*Instructors:*

Dr. Simina Boca, PhD, Associate Professor at ICBI, Georgetown University,
and Dr. Matthew McCoy, PhD, Associate Professor at ICBI, Georgetown
University

*3. EHR Data access and analysis:*

The scientific utility of EHR-derived “routine” clinical data generated as
a byproduct of care delivery has been previously demonstrated to enable
many research projects and discoveries that improve healthcare and patient
outcomes.
In this 3 hour hands-on workshop, we explore the challenges of the
secondary use of data in clinical information systems, learn the various
data sources and data types stored in an EHR system. Participants will
also design an observational study, extract and analyze data based on a
defined use case. We will provide a de-identified EHR patients' dataset as
well as access to tools for data analysis and visualization, including
RStudio & trial versions of Tableau. We will contact participants directly
with more details.

*Instructors:*

Dr. Ian Brooks, PhD and Mr. Stephen Fernandez, MPH
