OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE MONDAY FEBRUARY 24 AT 10 AM
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
A brief break in the cold weather prompted a little more activity
last week.
On Friday, the 21st, along the trail which runs between Kerwin Rd
and Riddell Rd in Kanata, there was a Great Horned Owl, a small
number of American Robins, a singing Purple Finch and a single
White-winged Crossbill giving a flight song.
Farther north along Kerwin, a in a marshy area, a Song Sparrow was
feeding with American Tree Sparrows. The same day an adult
Northern Goshawk was in the Constance Creek marsh on Berry Side
Rd.
On the 22nd, a fresh manure spread was discovered in a farm field
along Donald B Munro at Diamondview Rd in the Carp. Approximately
40 Horned Larks and 10 Snow Buntings were feeding here. This is
an area worth re-visiting.
On the 20th, 4 Lapland Longspurs were seen in a field in the
vicinity of Concession 20 in Casselman along with 4 Horned Larks
and numerous Snow Buntings.
On the evening of the 18th, a Barred Owl was heard calling from
the Ridge Rd in the Mer Bleue. The Barred Owl at Prindiville St
and North River Rd, south of the Rideau Tennis Club was seen again
on the afternoon of the 22nd. This owl has likely been present in
this unusual location since at least mid December.
And finally, beautiful albino House Finch joined a flock of
regular House Finches at a feeder on Belair Dr, south of the
Woodroffe exit of the 417 on the 23rd.
Thank-you. Good birding.
