A red necked grebe has been "located" below the new bridge in Latchford. I
picked the bird up at a place outside of Tomstown and released it in the
Montreal river . I had many conversations about what to do with the bird
with wild bird rehab specialists and many different birders and the release
up here was suggested as the best course of action. The bird was very
healthy as it had spent some time in a bath tub and had been eating well.
Lots of minnows are available in ice fishing land. The bird took to the
river nicely and with ample open water should do well. Not often that one
gets to see a red necked grebe so closely, especially in March. Would love
to hear why people think we would get a red necked grebe this time of year.
if they are encountering ice on the lower great lakes why would they proceed
inland?? I think the only red we will be seeing in a bird name for the next
month will be red breasted nuthatch or redpoll. I will be happy to report
the first red winged blackbird we see though. Would be happy to respond to
any inquiries or thoughts about this course of action. It seemed like the
right move to make but would appreciate any feedback people can offer.
