The lower than normal temperatures and a late winter snowstorm slowed down the advance of spring last week. Some of the flooded areas in the fields east of Ottawa were frozen and the water levels at the Cobb's Lake Creek flood plain are beginning to recede. Most of the waterfowl seen here on the weekend were Canada Geese and Northern Pintails. A couple of Northern Shovelers were seen with the other common puddle ducks east of Bourget and approximately 200 Snow Geese were in the same location on April 4. Single blue morph Snow Geese were reported throughout the week from Britannia, Brewer Park pond and Frank Kenney Rd. About a dozen Wood Duck were on Mud Lake at Britannia on the 2nd and reports of the Hooded Mergansers have come in from various locations. Turkey Vultures continue to trickle through with mainly single migrants reported. A Merlin was seen at Island Park Dr at Carling Ave and another at Bank St and Heron Rd on April 1 and 6 respective. A Peregrine Falcon flew over Earl Armstrong Rd on the 1st. A small covey of Gray Partridges is still being seen occasionally along Huntmar Rd, north of Palladium Dr in Kanata and a Ruffed Grouse has been visiting the backyard at 868 Acadian Gardens in Orleans where a Carolina Wren over wintered. The wren has not been reported since March 23. Seven Sandhill Cranes were feeding on the west side of Milton Rd northeast of Carlsbad Springs on April 3. A few Golden-crowned Kinglets, 2 Eastern Phoebes and hundreds of Dark-eyed Juncos were in the Britannia Woods on 2nd and a Fox Sparrow was at the feeder on Dolman Ridge Rd the same day. Going back to March 29, the female HARLEQUIN DUCK was still a Remic Rapids on the Ottawa River and also that same day a Red- shouldered Hawk was reported from Cumberland Ridge Rd in the area of the hydro field. Thank-you. Good birding. - End transcript Gordon Pringle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
