At 8:00pm, Thursday, June 12th, 2003, this is the Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The Hotline is normally revised on Thursday nights, unless an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.
The flurry of activity surrounding spring migration has dimished. A few migrants continue to be seen, including MOURNING WARBLER, CERULEAN WARBLER, and WILSON'S WARBLER in a central Hamilton yard, and OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, NORTHERN PARULA WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, and CAROLINA WREN at Shell Park/Bronte Woods. In and around the RBG this past week, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, PILEATED WOODPECKER and PINE WARBLER were seen at Rock Chapel, and PIED-BILLED GREBE and HOODED MERGANSER were reported from the Desjardins canal. Elsewhere, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, AMERICAN REDSTART, MOURNING WARBLER, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, FIELD SPARROW, and WOOD THRUSH were reported from the Waterdown North Wetland Trails, while SEDGE WREN, NORTHERN HARRIER, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, and BOBOLINK were on territory near Bronte Provincial Park. Other breeding birds reported this past week include a YELLOW WARBLER on the nest at LaSalle Park, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW at the 4th Concession & Brock Road in Flamborough, LEAST BITTERN, VIRGINIA RAIL, PIED-BILLED GREBE, MARSH WREN, and LEAST FLYCATCHER at Beverley Swamp, plus ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, MOURNING WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, HOODED WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, OVENBIRD, AMERICAN REDSTART, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, EASTERN TOWHEE, SCARLET TANAGER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, VEERY, EASTERN WOOD PEWEE, and SWAMP SPARROW at the Currie Tract on Guelph Line. Wrapping up this week's reports are a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER at the Petro Canada Pier, a RED-THROATED LOON on the lake nearby at the Pig & Whistle, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER at Tollgate Ponds, and a pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES visiting a feeder near Townsend.
