At 1:15pm, Thursday, September 4th, 2003, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an
unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.

Easterly winds produced some excellent sightings at
Van Wagner's Beach this past week. LONG-TAILED JAEGER
and PARASITIC JAEGER were seen yesterday, while four
LONG-TAILED and 22 PARASITIC JAEGERS were reported on
Tuesday. Also at Van Wagner's this week were 11
SABINE'S GULLS, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL,
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, BONAPARTE'S GULL, LONG-TAILED
DUCK, COMMON LOON, SANDERLING, and PEREGRINE FALCON
(at the Lift Bridge).

Shorebirds seen locally this past week include 15
species at the Grimsby Sewage Lagoons. Highlights were
RED KNOT, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, RUDDY TURNSTONE,
and BAIRD'S SANDPIPER. Out of town, 11 species of
shorebirds were reported from the Townsend Sewage
Lagoons, including WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and STILT
SANDPIPER. A WESTERN TANAGER was seen briefly at the
Townsend Sewage Lagoons on Saturday, but additional
attempts to locate this bird proved unsuccessful. A
trip to Rock Point Provincial Park produced 12 BAIRD'S
SANDPIPERS, a WESTERN SANDPIPER (on Saturday), RUDDY
TURNSTONE, SANDERLING and PEREGRINE FALCON.

Elsewhere, an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN turned up at
Cootes Paradise. Birders who went to view the Pelican
also reported GREAT EGRET, CASPIAN TERN, BALD EAGLE,
OSPREY, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, and EASTERN BLUEBIRD. On
other RBG properties, BALD EAGLE, COOPER'S HAWK,
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL, TURKEY VULTURE,
VEERY, and PHILADEPHIA VIREO were spotted at Rock
Chapel, and a COMMON MOORHEN turned up at the Hendrie
Valley.

Other local reports include ORCHARD ORIOLE and TURKEY
VULTURE near the Kenilworth Access, NORTHERN HARRIER,
AMERICAN KESTREL, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, and COMMON NIGHTHAWK at Courtcliff Park,
plus PINE WARBLER, OVENBIRD, and BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO
at the Waterdown North Wetland Trails.
