Migration Watch at Port Burwell PP
September October 5, 2003

This morning, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., 27 visitors and campers joined us to watch the fall migration at Port Burwell. Visitors came from as far as St Jacobs today. Despite the southwest winds there was a steady hawk flight of 390 individuals of 9 species including 8 Bald Eagles, 14 Cooper's Hawks, 22 Broad-winged Hawks and 1 Merlin.

For the second weekend in a row there was a record breaking flight of American Goldfinches with 2, 175 tallied in the 4 hours, although by the third hour watching the hawks took precedence over counting goldfinches so likely many more went undetected.

Other interesting sightings included a late Common Nighthawk, 1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird, 4 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 1 Pine Siskin, 1 Common Loon, and 7 species of warblers.

The interpretive migration watch will be held for one more Sunday: October 12.

Port Burwell PP is on the Lake Erie shoreline west of Long Point and south of Tillsonburg at the east end of Elgin County. The migration watch is at parking lot # 5 in the day-use/beach portion of the park.
Cost: Park entry fee ($6.50) or use your Ontario Parks season's pass.
