At 4:30pm, Thursday, November 27th, 2003, this is the Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.
It was a relatively quiet week in the Hamilton area. On the Stoney Creek lakeshore, the BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen at L.P. Sayers Park on the weekend while RED-THROATED LOONS were visible from the foot of Green's Road and at Van Wagner's Beach. Nearby in Hamilton Harbour, seven RED-NECKED GREBES, two HORNED GREBES and a COMMON LOON were reported. Elsewhere, a trip to the Hendrie Valley produced RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, CEDAR WAXWING, BUFFLEHEAD, NORTHERN SHOVELER, HAIRY WOODPECKER and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH. NORTHERN SHRIKES were spotted at the Grimsby Sewage Lagoons (one adult, one juvenile), and at the Waterdown North Wetland Trails. Other local reports include 17 SNOW BUNTINGS behind the arena on Olympic Drive in Dundas, GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Bronte Marsh, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW in a Burlington yard, plus a PILEATED WOODPECKER flying over Highway 5 and Brant Street, also in Burlington. Further afield, gulls seen on the Niagara River this past week include CALIFORNIA GULL, ICELAND GULL, THAYER'S GULL, BONAPARTE'S GULL, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. As an added bonus gull watchers were treated to a GOLDEN EAGLE in the gorge. Further west at Port Colborne, a PEREGRINE FALCON was perched in the bay, and at Rock Point Provincial Park, a PURPLE SANDPIPER was the lone shorebird at the point but a ROSS'S GOOSE and a late BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER also made appearances. The rarity that received the most attention this week on Ontbirds was a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, which has been visiting a feeder near Kingston since last Friday. That's all for this week, be sure to let us know about your sightings. Leave your name, telephone number, as well as the time and date of your call. Sightings can also be reported by e-mail.
