At 4:00pm, Thursday, December 11th, 2003, this is the Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.
The big news this week was the discovery of a GRAY FLYCATCHER during the annual Fisherville Christmas Bird Count. For directions please contact the Hotline by phone or e-mail. Other highlights of the Fisherville CBC were GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, HARLEQUIN DUCK, LEAST SANDPIPER, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, plus 287 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 73 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 41 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 89 EASTERN SCREECH OWLS, 85 SHORT-EARED OWLS, and 14 LONG-EARED OWLS. The St. Catharines CBC also took place this past week. A total of 74 species were seen, including a YELLOW WARBLER and a SNOWY OWL. Local reports include TUFTED TITMOUSE, COMMON REDPOLL, BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, BROWN CREEPER and PURPLE FINCH at the RBG, NORTHERN PINTAIL, CAROLINA WREN, PIED-BILLED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, ICELAND GULL, and GREATER WHITE FRONTED GOOSE at LaSalle Marina, NORTHERN GANNET at L.P. Sayers Park on the Stoney Creek lakeshore, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON at the Desjardins Canal, and 300 COMMON REDPOLLS behind the Spring Valley Pool in Dundas. One yard report was received from Caledonia of COMMON REDPOLL, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD. Highlights from the Niagara River this past week were MEW GULL, CALIFORNIA GULL, BLACK-HEADED GULL, NORTHERN GANNET, and PURPLE SANDPIPER. Birders are reminded that any unusual bird seen between today and December 29 could be important to the Hamilton Christmas Bird Count. Please report location and date seen of any summer birds still in the area, winter finches not seen every year, or unusual waterfowl or raptors. Examples are grackles, blackbirds, SONG SPARROW or other sparrows, any warbler, redpolls, siskins, grosbeaks, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, COMMON or KING EIDER, eagles or large falcons.
