At 4:00pm, Friday, December 26th, 2003, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an
unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.

Season's Greetings to Hotline listeners! I hope Santa
was good to you and may your new year be filled with
life birds!

The annual Hamilton Area Christmas Bird Count takes
place today. Good luck to the counters...more news in
next week's Hotline report.

Now onto the birds...

Birds seen in and around the RBG this past week
include COMMON REDPOLL and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on
the Hopkins Trail, BROWN THRASHER, RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRD, GRAY CATBIRD, GREAT BLUE HERON, BELTED
KINGFISHER, and NORTHERN SHOVELLER on the North Shore
Trails, plus GRAY CATBIRD, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, CAROLINA
WREN, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and BROWN THRASHER in
the Hendrie Valley. 

Elsewhere, RED-THROATED LOON, COMMON LOON, RED-NECKED
GREBE, PIED-BILLED GREBE, WOOD DUCK, TUNDRA SWAN,
HOODED MERGANSER, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW were
reported from LaSalle Marina, four GRAY PARTRIDGE
turned up at the Brantford Airport, a SHORT-EARED OWL
was spotted on 10th Road in Stoney Creek, a NORTHERN
SHRIKE was seen in Oakville, and a possible GYRFALCON
was reported in the Bronte area.

This week's yard reports include WINTER WREN, PINE
SISKIN and COOPER'S HAWK in Oakville, AMERICAN ROBIN,
PINE SISKIN, and COMMON REDPOLL in Killbride, and SONG
SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and COOPER'S HAWK in
Beamsville.

Highlights from the Niagara River over the weekend
were HORNED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, HARLEQUIN DUCK,
MERLIN, BALD EAGLE, PURPLE SANDPIPER, COMMON LOON, and
TUNDRA SWAN, plus LESSER BLACK-BACKED, ICELAND,
GLAUCOUS, CALIFORNIA and LITTLE GULL.

Last but not least, the GRAY FLYCATCHER was reported
as recently as Monday in the Fisherville/Cayuga area.
