Hello Ontbirders
Today December 31, 2003 I spent 3 or 4 hours birding the open water
along the Ottawa River at Deschenes Rapids and Remic Rapids. Highlights
included the following:
At Deschenes Rapids: Common Loon 1, Bufflehead 2, Bald Eagle 3, Merlin
1
At Remic Rapids: Barrow's Goldeneye 2 , male & female, Peregrine Falcon
2 on R.H Coats Building

At dusk I did a gull count off Deschenes Rapids. Overall had 4000+
gulls, 7 species including 1 ad. Lesser Black-backed Gull, 1 first
winter Thayer's Gull, 11 Iceland Gull, 27 Glaucous Gull.

Directions: Remic Rapids can be reached by taking Parkdale Ave.
north from Hwy. 417 in
Ottawa to the Western Parkway. Follow parkway west to Remic Rapids
lookout and park. The Barrow's can be viewed from the cement lookout.
If the lookout parking lot is closed you will have to park at the next
parking area just west of Remic and walk back.
The Deschenes Rapids/Britannia Point can be reached by following
Carling Ave. west of Richmond Road and turn north on Britannia Road and
follow down to Cassels Road. You can view the rapids by turning left on
Cassels and park at the Yacht Club or by turning right and parking at
the entrance to the Water Purification Plant and walk along the
northside to Britannia point. If you require additional information
please email me privately.
good birding & Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year -All the
