Rondeau Daily Report May11/04
Another day with a good over-all selection of passerines. A total of 20 species of warblers were recorded today. Two Cerulean Warblers were along the South Pt., trail as were two Golden-wings and a White-eyed Vireo. The first Mourning Warbler of the year was recorded from the Spicebush Trail. Another first of year today from the same trail was a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Lincolns Sparrows continue to be seen around the Visitor Centre. The Prothonotary Warblers were starting to sing today, though not consistently. They continue to be found along the slough that runs through the Tulip Tree Trail to Gardiner Road and the big slough on Bennett Road. The Tulip Tree bird has a leg band and may be one banded here last year. These birds work up and down these sloughs, usually low to the water, passing the good observation points every couple of hours. How long you have to wait to see one is dependent on luck, 2 minutes to two hours with no fixed schedule noticeable. Most of the ducks have left the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons, though Ruddy Ducks are still present and were seen displaying today. Also present was 1 Short-billed Dowitcher, one dowdy looking Dunlin and two resplendent looking female Wilsons Phalaropes. The Friends of Rondeau are sponsoring two guided hikes daily until May 23rd. His sighting was well-documented and despite the attempts of many others this afternoon, the bird was not relocated. If you plan on visiting the park in search of this species, please ask at the Gate or the Visitor Centre for the birding brochure - Loop woods is clearly marked on the map - the bird was seen on the seasonal trail, found opposite to the northern part of the Tip shuttle loop. It was a great day here in the park - lots of birds in many location!
