Rondeau Daily Report May18/04 Few birds reported today but then there were few people in the park to find them. There was a steady movement of migrants up the east edge of the park, though overall numbers remained low. Migrants seen near the South Pt Trail parking lot included Parula, Wilsons, Canada, Blackpoll, and Blue-winged Warblers, Philadelphia Vireo, and a 1st year male Summer Tanager. In total 17 warbler species were seen down in that area in about 3 hours. A Mourning Warbler was reported from the Spicebush Trail.
A Black-billed Cuckoo seems to have taken up residence around the visitor centre and is seen in the open every now and then throughout the day. In addition to Whip-Poor-Will, a Chuck-Wills-Widow was heard on Harrison Trail last night. The Friends of Rondeau are sponsoring two guided hikes daily until May 23rd. This afternoon around 2:30pm, Tuesday I was unable to find it or the Semi-palmated Plovers at the Tollgate Ponds, though there were a few Killdeer and one Spotted Sandpiper. It was slightly rainy and extremely windy. I was surprised to see the falconer's Red-tailed Hawks and one falcon pinnned (tied?) at the edge of the pond No directions since I didn't find the plover.
