Early this evening, I just happened to look out in the backyard and there were two Common Redpolls perched on a decorative planter hook. They flew off quickly and I think I glanced out at just the right time.

Location: From the junction of Kawartha Lakes 48 and 6, go north to the lift lock. Turn right immediately after passing under the lock, onto Talbot River Road. Take the first left onto Shrike Road. The birds were in a small marsh a km. or so north. There's a pond on the west (left) side (often a good spot to see a Blue-winged Teal), and the larger marsh on the east. The "City" of Kawartha Lakes is about 1.5 hours northeast of Toronto. If you are birding Wylie Road: from the south endof Wylie, turn east (left) on McNamee. Shrike Road is the first intersection; turn right (south) and find the marsh below the big hill (and don't forget to smell the lilacs).
