During the morning hours of Aug.8 a Great Egret was visible in the eastern waters of Cranberry Marsh-- it could be seen by standing on the mid-rail of the north platform on the west side of the wetlands. Also 2 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds were noted along the pathway to this platform.
For the past 2 days I have not been able to see the Red-headed Woodpeckers at the south end of the old Whitby Mental Hospital cottages-- today John Stirrat and I discovered a juvenile Cooper's Hawk in one of the trees between cottages 28 and 30. Overhead were Chimney Swifts. The Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch will kick off prior to the last weekend of the month. To get to the hospital grounds-- west from Henry St. in Whitby on Victoria St. to the first street on the south side--Gordon St.-- south right to the bottom-- on the corner is cottage #30 For Cranberry Marsh-- south down Hall's Rd., which is 1 block east of Lakeridge on Victoria St. in Whitby.
