Yet another Pacific Loon! At about 12:45 pm today (Mon. Nov. 1) I had a
basic plumaged Pacific Loon on Lake Ontario off the west end of
Confederation Park in Hamilton. The bird was about 300 m offshore and I
had it in view for almost half an hour. It sat on the surface preening
for about 15 minutes, then began diving and moving farther out. There
were several Red-throated and Common Loons in the general area as well.

Directions: From the QEW highway in Hamilton, take the Hwy 20
(Centennial Parkway) exit; go north to the North Service Rd; turn left
follow this road as it turns right towards the lake; just before it
turns left onto Van Wagners Beach Dr, there is a parking lot for
Confederation Park on the right side. Park here and view the lake from
the shoreline. There is a self-serve parking fee for this lot. Note
that Van Wagners Beach Dr a bit farther west is under construction and
there may be delays when coming from the other direction.

Monday, Nov.1's welcoming northwesterlies brought many observers and, over a
period of 6 hours, 208 migrating raptors.
As Dave Shirley left he proclaimed that we would have a GE!!--sure enough,
at 1250 a juvenile Golden Eagle came through--we dubbed it "Dave's Eagle".
It was a great day for close-ups of 3 N.Goshawks, along with 157 near and
distant Red-taileds, 28 Rough-leggeds and a fast-moving Merlin.
Our Rough-legged total has reached 139 (3 being Dark morphs).

Other highlights were--many Pine Siskins, a Wilson's Snipe and a Northern
Shrilke, along with a Red Admiral butterfly.

I thank the 12 observers, with special kudos to Jean Iron and Mary Shuster
for their keen eyes, along with Ron Pittaway's identifying expertise.

Exit 401 at Salem, south to Bayly, east through LakeRidge to Hall's Rd.,
south to the second roadside parking area.
