Hi Everyone
Winter finch numbers are increasing in the Ottawa area. Today I had a
number of small flocks of Common Redpoll (19,11,3,4) in the Shirley's Bay and
Dunrobin area. Also a few singles of Pine Siskin, Pine Grosbeak and three flock
of Evening Grosbeak(2,3.5).
On Wednesday I had 2 flocks of Pine Grosbeak(2,3) and a flock of 30+ Common
Redpoll along Kerwin Rd.
At least three Red-headed Woodpeckers are still present at the old burn
site at Constance Bay, hopefully they will survive the winter. Along the
shoreline the previously reported Greater White-fronted Goose was still present
in a flock of 400+ Canada Geese along with a single Cackling Goose. A late
Black-bellied Plover flew by heading west along the shoreline.
There has also been 2 Cackling Geese at Andrew Haydon Park since Wednesday
and are easiest to see early morning or mid afternoon in the few thousand
Canada Geese.
With the colder overnight temperatures the water on the west side of the
dyke at Shirley's Bay is frozen for now and today there was a good selection of
gulls resting on the ice including Lesser Black-backed, Glaucous and Iceland.

                                                            good birding
                                                            Bruce

Directions:Summer Tanager: From Ottawa take Hwy.417 west to Maitland Ave. exit
and go south on Maitland . After crossing Baseline Road watch for Starwood Road
and turn right and go west to Pender. The house is at the north west corner of
the intersection

Directions:Red-headed Wdpk: From Ottawa travel west bound on Hwy. 417 to the
March Rd./Eagleson Road and exit right onto March Rd. Follow to Dunrobin Road
and turn right continuing northwest through Woodlawn. At the hill turn right
onto Constance Bay Rd following it for approx. 1.5 km. Turn left on Allbirch
Road and drive 1.3 km to the " T " intersection. Turn left on Bishop Davis
Drive and then right on Bayview Drive. Follow Bayview Drive to Ritchie St.
Turn right and go a short distance to Whistler Rd. Turn left and drive .3 km
and watch for a gate on the right. The trail through the burn area is opposite
the gate. Parking is limited. The old burn area is on your left.
For the G.W.F. and Cackling Geese don't turn on Allbirch Str. but continue
along Constance Bay Drive passed the gas station and at the curve in the road
take the fire lane on the right to the water.

Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 7 hours

Official Counter: Calvin Brennan

Observers: Alan Ryff, Fred Kirn, Raburn Howland

Weather:
Today’s conditions were sunny with little or no cloud cover. Winds were
moderate to strong from the north switching to strong east-northeast by
late morning.

Observations:
The flight was steady throughout the day but very difficult to keep track
of given the high sky, strong winds and a moisture layer that was whipped
up off the lake by the wind. Single birds or even groups of birds would
appear and then as quickly disappear, often never to reappear in the blue
of the sky. Add to this the fact that with this particular wind direction
the hawks were well spread out over a large area of the sky. However we
did manage to have a couple of excellent views of adult Northern Goshawks.
I would say that anyone that has never been able to see an adult Goshawk
or who has not had much experience with Goshawks in general; this season
is providing an excellent opportunity to bone up on your ID skills.
