Hi Everyone
Yesterday, March 8,2005 birded a number of locations in the Ottawa area.
Overall it was interesting but there was a definite drop in the number of
Great Gray Owls. We covered the Shirley's Bay area and March Valley Road and
only observed two owls. I do know, however, that these birds do play hide
and seek. I drove the same road again at dusk tonight and had zero. Maybe
they're on the move, have dispersed or maybe it's the weather??
The two male Barrow's Goldeneye at Remic Rapids were still present, one
male displaying to a female Common Goldeneye. More hybrids!? The male
Greater Scaup was also feeding above the rapids. After a lengthy search we
observed a flock of 140+ Bohemian Waxwings at the end of Grandview Road off
Carling Ave.,just west of Moodie Drive. No luck with the Northern Hawk-Owl
in the Gatineau Park but we did see an immature Northern Goshawk fly over.
Today, March 9th I had one Snowy Owl on Brownlee Road off Eagleson Road
and a small flock of Pine Grosbeaks along Donald B. Munro Drive in Carp.
                                                                good birding
