Atrip down to Samuel Smith park today found several Horned Grebe amongst the
other ducks, one male in breeding plumage. From there headed east to Humber
Park East where the Harlequin Duck was happily swimming around the pond with
some Bufflehead, just before I left at 3:30 he flew with the Bufflehead over
near the islands by the flower gardens. Also at the pond was 4 Ring-necked
Ducks.
happy birding all

OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - APR 04 2005 AT 4:30 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Many highlights from the 1st weekend of April included a singing
male VARIED THRUSH on Rue de Saint-Malo in Aylmer, Quebec on the
morning of April 2nd; the bird was not subsequently reported.
Another rarity on the Quebec side, an adult CALIFORNIA GULL on the
Ottawa River behind Parc Brebeuf, was seen again on the 1st and
2nd but not since then. On the Ontario side, the most recent
report of the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Rothwell Heights was on
March 28.

Snow Geese were prominent features on the local landscape, with
approx. 4000 mostly adult Greater Snow's in the cornfields along
Russell Rd. east of Bourget on April 1st, approx. 2500 birds at
this location on the 3rd, another flock of at least 1500 birds in
the Riceville area at Concession #11 near the bridge over the
South Nation River also on the 3rd, and smaller flocks along Frank
Kenney Rd. in the east and Greenbank Rd. at the Experimental Farm
in the west since April 1st.

Great Blue Herons are now being seen regularly, including several
at the heronry in the Leitrim wetland at Albion and High Rds., and
new waterfowl reported so far have included American Wigeon,
Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal and Ring-necked Duck, most of
these in the flooded fields east of Ottawa along with increased
numbers of Northern Pintails.

The 1st Osprey of the season was observed on the South Nation
River west of Casselman on the 2nd, and several migrant Turkey
Vultures along with a few Northern Harriers, Rough-legged Hawks
and American Kestrels were observed in many agricultural areas
over the past 4 days.

Three SANDHILL CRANES were in the fields on the west side of
Milton Rd. north of Perrault Rd. on the 3rd, with a brief
courtship display observed between two of these birds. American
Woodcocks were reported from Rockcliffe Park on the evening of
April 1st, Eastern Phoebes were noted in Richmond, Ontario as well
as Aylmer, Quebec on March 31st and April 3rd respectively, and 3
American Pipits were seen east of Bourget also on the 3rd.

The 1st local Yellow-rumped Warbler was found on the Quebec side
at Deschenes along the bike path near the bridge west of the end
of Vanier St. today the 4th. An early Fox Sparrow was on Riddell
Rd. in Kanata on March 31st and another was singing on Rue de
Saint-Malo in Aylmer on April 3rd. An influx of White-crowned
Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos and Cedar Waxwings was noted in
Rothwell Heights on the weekend, and birds that continue to move
through included Common Redpoll, Pine Siskin and Bohemian Waxwing,
with a flock of approx. 100 Bohemians on Boul. Lucerne west of the
Champlain Bridge on April 3rd and a flock of approx. 50 at Ridge
Rd. and Ramsayville Rd. today April 4th.

And last but not least, our famous "Great Gray winter" is winding
down, with only a few GREAT GRAY OWLS reported since March 28th,
including 4 on March Valley Rd. that day, and single birds on
Russell Rd. in Carlsbad Springs on the 30th, Rifle Rd. at Carling
Ave. on the 31st and Dunrobin Rd. north of Kilmaurs Side Rd. on
April 3rd.

Thank you - Good Birding!
