OFO members are reminded of the outing this Sunday with John Carley to
Leslie Street Spit. Meet 8 a.m. at the base of the Spit (Tommy
Thompson Park) at the foot of Leslie Street at Unwin Ave.
Again, this trip is restricted to OFO members (and friends).
There should be several migrants to discover along with breeing birds
and butterflies.

The gang's all here - just in time for the Huron
Fringe Birding Festival! Today I started to do
my Baillie birdathon but a problem with my car
cut the day short after only 6 hours.
Still, 156 species is reasonable considering the
very abbreviated day. I birded MacGregor Point
Provincial Park, the shore between Port Elgin
and Southampton, Chantry Island, Boat Lake,
Isaac Lake, Wiarton sewage lagoons, Dyer's Bay
road to Cabot Head, and my backyard. The Huron
shoreline from Sauble northward was fogged in so
I didn't stop to look for anything there. The
majority of the species were located within 25
miles of MacGregor Point.
Highlights were: the warblers and vireos at
MacGregor (most species but in low numbers),
Western Meadowlark (4th concession of Saugeen
about 4 miles east of highway 21), pair of
Common Terns passing a fish back and forth at
Isaac Lake, Orioles everywhere, all the expected
flycatchers (except Yellow-bellied), all the
usual woodpeckers (except Red-headed), pair of
Sandhill Cranes on Dyer's Bay road, and a roost
of 25-30 Turkey Vultures near the lake. A mink
raced under my car as it crossed highway 6 just
north of Wiarton, and a fox stopped to stare
while I completed a nest record card north of
Oliphant.
Missing species that I should have found: all
the owls and other evening species, Chimney
Swift, Sedge Wren, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered
Hawk, Merlin, Eastern Towhee, Grasshopper
Sparrow, and Cape May Warbler. Oh well...
The Lark Sparrow reported at Cabot Head was not
observed. There are a large number of species
in the region at the moment and birders should
have no problem locating 100+ species in a day.
Good birding,
Cindy Cartwright
