A large group of KFN members lead by Peter Good visited Prince Edward
Point and the Amherstview Lagoons today and tallied 106 species of birds.
Highlights from Prince Edward Pt. were 10 species of raptors including 20
BALD EAGLES with 6 together in one kettle, 3 MERLINS, 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 1
COOPER'S HAWK, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and 6 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS. 14 species
of warblers were observed including 1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. Some other
birds seen were 2 WILD TURKEYS, 3 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS and 2 WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROWS.
The eastern pond at the Amherstview Lagoons is now being drained and has
excellent shorebird habitat with 7 species of shorebirds being observed. A
single RUSTY BLACKBIRD was feeding along the muddy shoreline and the day
ended with a single SANDHILL CRANE which circled directly overhead for great
viewing. 13 species of butterflies and 6 species of dragonflies were seen.
Great weather, fun times and lots of birds.
