For at least the past two days, a flock of approximately 35 sandhill cranes has been observed at Laurel Creek Conservation Area in Waterloo. In the early mornings, they have been in the southeast sector, near the dam; they then fly to the southwest. LCCA is reached by taking Northfield Drive West from the Conestoga Parkway (Highway 85). After crossing Westmount Road, the road curves to the left; turn right onto Bearinger Road, and there is a small parking lot near this intersection.

THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 5:00 PM, SUNDAY NOV. 27, 2005.

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Winter-like conditions have arrived in our region, and most of our
small local water bodies are now frozen. The Ottawa River has also
begun to freeze along the edges of the quiet bays, and water birds
are now at a premium. Three Black Scoters were on the Ottawa River
at Andrew Haydon Park on the 26th. A female-plumaged HARLEQUIN
DUCK was seen on the Ottawa River at Bate Island on the 21st but
has not been subsequently reported. A male Barrow's Goldeneye was
reported on the Rideau River behind the Rideau Tennis Club on the
20th and 22nd, and a male hybrid Common X Barrow's was seen here
on the 27th, no doubt the same bird that was previously reported
from the Ottawa River on October 29th and November 6th. A single
Brant reported from Remic rapids on the 19th has not been seen
since then.

Best birds of the week were found this weekend - a NORTHERN HAWK
OWL was discovered along Innes Rd. immediately east of Frank Kenny
Rd. on the morning of the 26th, and was still present and very
active here on the morning of the 27th. A Short-eared Owl was
being harassed by 3 Rough-legged Hawks in the Ste-Rose area east
of Casselman on the 27th. A covey of 11 GRAY PARTRIDGE was seen
on the north side of Wall Rd. west of Trim Rd., in a weedy area
near an abandoned barn on the 26th and 27th.

In other reports...2 Bald Eagles were noted at Shirley's Bay on
the 23rd and a sub-adult bird was feeding on the ice off Andrew
Haydon Park on the 26th. An adult Peregrine Falcon was "duck-
watching" at Bate Island on the 21st. Back on the 13th, a flock of
32 Wild Turkeys was seen on the north side of Fernbank Rd. west of
Stittsville and approx. a dozen were seen again on Rideau Rd. west
of Limebank Rd. on the 22nd. A Snowy Owl was seen again in the
Ste-Rose area east of Casselman on the 26th. Yet another Carolina
Wren was reported from Forest Park in Embrun on the 20th, and
reports of Bohemian Waxwings continue to come in, most recently
from the village of Carp on the 22nd, and March Valley Rd. on the
26th. A very late American Pipit was reported from the Casselman
area on the 26th and at least 2 Lapland Longspurs were among large
numbers of Snow Buntings and Horned Larks in fields the Navan area
between Perrault Rd. and Trim Rd. on the weekend. A single Pine
Grosbeak was at the Rideau Tennis Club on the 27th, and 15 Evening
Grosbeaks were at a feeder on Clarence-Cambridge Rd. at the east
end of the Larose Forest the same day.

Thank you - Good Birding!
