We saw two Bald Eagles today about 2:30pm west of Ottawa. They were soaring and circling together in sight for about 10 minutes. Got several pix. Directions from Ottawa: 416 west to Arnprior, exit left at main intersection on road to White Lake, turn left at the village of White Lake onto Bellamy Road and proceed east for several km. We saw the eagles about 1-2 km before the power lines. If you have no luck, don't worry; you can continue east and have pancakes and maple syrup at Fulton's sugar bush! Both birds = were observed in fields frequented by owls last year.=20 The first bird was in a field on the west side of Regional Highway 121 = just north of town, 0.5 kms past the intersection with Regional Highway = 8. We had a good but distant view from the driveway of # 890. It was = seen at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and again at 5:00 p.m.. Check all the = deciduous trees, especially those near the cedar bush. At 5 p.m. it was = north of # 890 actively hunting from a post. I give the address of # = 890 as a reference only. I have not talked with these people and do not = know if they have seen the bird. I parked on the shoulder of the = highway, not in the driveway. This bird was first seen on February 27, = 06 The second bird was in a field opposite 957 Balsam Grove Road. Take = Balsam Grove Road north from the Glenarm Road ( the highway between = Beaverton and Fenelon Falls, aka Regional Highway 8 ) and continue 3 or = 4 kms to just past Whitetail Road. At 4:45 p.m. The bird was sitting in = a tree in the yard of an abandoned farm house just north of # 957 on the = opposite (east) side. This bird has been in the area for at least 2 = weeks. Again, the address is for reference only. I don't know if they = are birder friendly. Hope this helps those studying the echo flight. There is nothing in this photo that appears unusual or "doctored". The EXIF data embedded in the photo confirms the date and time of the exposure as 14:16:49 (2:16:49 pm) Feb. 27, 2006. This sighting and the one earlier this winter in Southwestern Ontario may be indications that recent species recovery efforts, including the release of 266 birds in Pennsylvania, may be baring some fruit.
