The following report is from observations submitted by Angela Martin and Carmelle Girouard of the Lavigne area.

The open fields along Michael Road east of Highway 64. between :Lavigne and Verner contain at least 1,000 Sandhill Cranes. The cranes start to arrive the in late afternoon and spend the nights in the fields. They have been gathering for a number of years. The numbers are building. This concentration will last until at least mid-October.

The hunting season has started and hunting activity may disperse the flocks.

Directions from south: Take 400 north and then follow 69 towards Sudbury. North of French River turn east (right) onto Highway 64. Follow through Monetville and Lavigne. North of Lavigne is Michael Road. This area is flat pasture and cash crops lands. The cranes gather along both Michael, Millerand Road (the next one to the north and which goes west), and Leclair Road (the second road to the north and which goes east.)

Directions from the north: From Highway 17 between Sturgeon Falls and Sudbury take Highway 64 south from Verner and look for the side roads mentioned above.
