28 participants enjoyed unseasonably warm weather yesterday to locate 57 species.
New species for the count were: Horned Grebe Great Blue Heron White-winged Scoter Long-tailed Duck Northern Harrier Bonaparte's Gull Belted Kingfisher Horned Lark Brown Creeper American Robin Yellow-rumped Warbler Song Sparrow Red Crossbill Obviously the warm temperatures and open water were good for this count circle. Winter finches and owls were noticably absent. Cackling geese show up daily among the larger flock of about 2000 Canadas - these Canadas part of a larger mass wintering in the area that I guess consists of 10/15000 birds - a Bald- headed eagle had them all in the air a week or so ago - the air full of them from Hwy 407 in the South to North of Hwy 7. I suppose there are GTA records of over-wintering Cackling geese ? Lesser scaup, Pintail, Common mergansers, Buffleheads and Black ducks are commonly found in the mix - a juvenile Red- shouldered hawk hung around the pond for a couple of days before Christmas - cheers - Stan Long ps - Reeosr Pond lies just North fo Hwy 407 on Reesor Road in Markham From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Jan 4 17:02:36 2007 Return-Path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Delivered-To: ontbirds@hwcn.org Received: from BAYC1-PASMTP09.CEZ.ICE (bayc1-pasmtp09.bayc1.hotmail.com [65.54.191.169]) by king.hwcn.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 97523634A3 for <ontbirds@hwcn.org>; Thu, 4 Jan 2007 17:02:35 -0500 (EST) X-Originating-IP: [70.48.69.101] X-Originating-Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Received: from Don ([70.48.69.101]) by BAYC1-PASMTP09.CEZ.ICE over TLS secured channel with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.1830); Thu, 4 Jan 2007 14:03:46 -0800 From: "Don Wigle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <ontbirds@hwcn.org> Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2007 17:02:32 -0500 Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.6626 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.3028 Importance: Normal X-OriginalArrivalTime: 04 Jan 2007 22:03:47.0406 (UTC) FILETIME=[355996E0:01C7304C] Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.1 Subject: [Ontbirds]Rough-legged Hawks, near Ottawa X-BeenThere: ontbirds@hwcn.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2007 22:02:36 -0000 Saw two Rough-legged Hawks at 1:30pm today on Scheele Road just west of Arnprior - the birds put on a fantastic aerial display with flyovers and hovering. Lots of pix taken. Directions from Ottawa: 417 west to Arnprior, continue west a few km on the 2-lane section (Hwy 17), continue past Campbell Side Road, right at Scheele Road. Birds were seen over fields on right side of road within a few hundred metres of the Hwy. Don Wigle Ottawa
