Hello Ontbirds people, I received 2 messages to the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Bird Status Line today - both sightings were from a couple of days ago, but were just called in today, 05 February.
03 Feb 07 - 1 American Three-toed Woodpecker - seen @ 1:20 pm by Chris Rimmer, at the west end of Rue Lamoureux in the community of Deschenes (Aylmer), Quebec. It was searched for on the 4th but not seen. DIRECTIONS: from Ottawa, take Island park Dr. north to the Champlain bridge and cross over to the Quebec side. Turn left (west) on Boul. Lucerne to Ch. Vanier, then left (south) on Vanier to Ch. Lamoureux. Right (west) on Lamoureux to the small "swampy" area at the end. This is not a coniferous woods, but a few 3-toed's seem to be checking out various locations this season, and are just "lucky to see" birds. 02 Feb 07 - 1 Great Gray Owl - seen by Karen McKenna, along Galetta Side Rd. near Fitzroy Harbour, flying over the road & then perched in a tree. A specific location along Galetta Side Rd. was not given, but several GGOWs were in or near this area during the "Great Gray Invasion" of 2005. DIRECTIONS: from Ottawa, take Hwy 417 west to exit 155 (March Rd.) then northeast on March Rd. to Regional Rd. #5 (Carp Rd). Take Carp Rd. northwest to Galetta Side Rd. This is the closest intersection to the road that goes to Fitzroy Harbour. A "lucky to see" bird indeed! Thanks to everyone who calls in great bird sightings to the OFNC Bird Status Line, and any further info about the aforementioned neat stuff (and others) is greatly appreciated.
