THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 8:00 pm, FRIDAY MARCH 2nd, 2007

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

A week of tantalizingly spring-like weather ended with a wintry blast of
strong east winds, freezing rain and snow, but also with several good bird
sightings.

A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continues to haunt the Ottawa River but apparently
at no fixed address. A bird seen in the Deschenes rapids near Britannia on
the 25th is probably the same one that has been sporadically spotted at
Remic rapids and Lemieux Island all month. A male Green-winged Teal and a
female Wood Duck were still on the Rideau River as of the 26th at Billings
Bridge. Four Bald Eagles were reported from the Eardley-Masham area of the
Gatineau hills on the 27th, and an adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK continues to
frequent the woods and backyards of a suburban neighbourhood in Aylmer,
Quebec. It has been regularly seen at or near #46 Prom. Lakeview and most
recently at Rue de Golf on the 27th.

Spring-like conditions prompted some owls to start calling in the evenings
early this week - 2 Great Horned Owls were heard near Dunrobin at Vances
Side Rd. & Woodkilton Rd. on the 27th, and Northern Saw-whet Owls were heard
on the 25th and 26th along Munster Rd. at both Kettles and Soldier's Line
Rds. The NORTHERN HAWK OWL west of Brennan's Hill, Quebec, was still present
at Ch. McDonald & Ch. Legault as of at least the 25th, and up to 3
Short-eared Owls have been seen nearly every evening this week
hunting at dusk along Ch. de la Riviere south of Breckenridge, Quebec near a
sign by a wooden fence that says "Breckenridge".

Northern birds are still in the news, with reports of single female AMERICAN
THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS from both the Quebec and Ontario sides. On the 27th,
one was in a coniferous wooded area near a cattle farm at #3550 Conc. #6
west of Ch. Hammond which runs off Hwy 148 east of Quyon, and another was
along the infamously frustrating Kerwin Rd. trail west of Kanata on the
26th. On the Eardley-Masham Rd. on the 26th, a female BLACK-BACKED
WOODPECKER was discovered near the top of the hill along the road into
Gatineau Park, and numerous Red and White-winged Crossbills and Pine Siskins
continue to be reported from the Gatineau hills as well.

Thank you - Good Birding!
