Hi All After receiving numerous e-mails questioning my sighting & only having an old copy of Petersons Guide to go by I decided to research the Shrike. With the help of an article sent to me by Mike Cranford & other articles & pictures I must revise my post & sat that it was a Northern Shrike & not a Loggerhead that I saw. At 10:20 this morning with overcast skies, while watching ducks at Gray Road in Stoney Creek, I suddenly noticed a large creamy grey falcon flying low and fast over the water going west toward Van Wagner's Beach and probably the Burlington Lift Bridge area. This bird was intermediary in size between a Ring-billed and Herring Gull, and the gulls were getting out of the way! It was definitely lighter (and larger) than the two Peregrine Falcons that are hanging out at the Burlington Lift Bridge. When I first spotted it, it was only 35 feet from me and flying away so I never got a look at its facial features. I've never seen a falcon this colour, nor have I seen one flying so low over the water. It had obvious falcon shape, wing shape, and flight characteristics, meaning that it was nothing but a falcon. If it's what I think it may be, it could be spotted anywhere along the GTA lakeshore. Hope it decides to rest somewhere. Directions for a moving target? Maybe try the Burlington area. Exit the QEW at North Shore BLVD and drive the Lakeshore Rd., or take beach Rd. toward the Lift Bridge. Perhaps watch at Bronte Harbour, where Bronte Rd. meets Lake Ontario. There might be a possible resting place for it on the new lighthouse restaraunt.
