Cooler temperatures may have slowed some of the early bird activity but good sightings are coming in.
There is debate about the Nightjar at the tip. Birders are choosing between CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW and WHIP-POOR-WILL. The bird is at the TIP west of the boardwalk across from the 42nd parallel trail. Other birds reported from the Tip are a singing Mourning Warbler and a Hooded Warbler. Blue-winged, Black-throated Blue, and Chestnut-sided were among the Warblers seen on Woodland Nature Trail. Clay-coloured Sparrow is in the West Beach parking area still. Prothonotary Warbler is being seen around the DeLaurier homestead site. The Common Nighthawk is, at the same roost as yesterday, just north of the entrance to the Marsh Boardwalk parking lot.. There have been no reports, as yet, from the North of the Park from outside the Park. X-BeenThere: ontbirds@hwcn.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 13 May 2007 02:17:48 -0000 Hello Fellow Birders, It was on the 30th of April that the first ORIOLE showed up but today we have 8 regulars. The females have not shown up yet. On Thursday, May 10, 2007 we sighted 2 female RUBY THROATED HUMMING BIRDS at the feeder. On Friday we saw the first male. It is very unusual to have the females come before the males. The first INDIGO BUNTING made his appearance in our yard today along with 3 ROSE BREASTED GROSBEAKS & several WHITE CROWNED SPARROWS. Saw 5 GOSLINGS by the lake today. On our cycling trip from Niagara Falls to Fort Erie we saw literally 100's of GOSLINGS along side the Niagara River. Directions: Take Mill St S off Highway # 401 towards the lake and stop your vehicle in front of our house at 590 Mill St S or park in the road allowance across the road from our house in order not to frighten the birds away. A total of 79 species including 17 warbler species were seen. Highlights included excellent views of Cape May warblers and Northern Parula Warblers. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were much in evidence including a pair tending a nest at eye level close to the road. Birders had an opportunity to compare Red-shouldered Hawk and Red-tailed Hawks that were circling together overhead. An additional highlight was a visit to the banding station to see the banding activity. OFO thanks Terry Sprague for once again leading an excellent trip. Chester Gryski Director, OFO
