Ontbirders:

The American White Pelican on Snake Island in the Bay of Quinte first reported by Terry Sprague yesterday in his Weekly Bird Report From Prince Edward County and The Quinte Area was present late this afternoon on the south shore of the island. The bird was very active swimming and feeding along the south shore of the island and preening on a rock off the west end of the island after chasing a small group of cormorants off the rock. The bird also spent some time resting and preening on the island as well. The bird was seen from the boat launch area at Massassauga Point Conservation Area in Prince Edward County as was the case yesterday. As Terry mentioned in his posting, a scope is necessary to see the bird. The bird appears to be identical in plummage to the chick-feeding adult in the latest National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America.

Directions: Exit from the 401 at interchange 543 at Belleville. Follow Highway 62 south which is North Front Street to Dundas Street in downtown Belleville. Turn right on Dundas Street West to Bay Bridge Road. Turn left on Bay Bridge Road which crosses over the Bay of Quinte. After crossing the bridge turn left at Prince Edward County Road 28. Turn left again at Massassauga Road and follow it for approximately 7 kilometres to the boat launch area at Massassauga Point Conservation Area. Snake Island is a west of the area and is easily identifiable. It is the only small island in that area occupied almost entirely by cormorants, obvious also by the skeletal remains of dead trees.
