Hi everyone,
The 22nd annual Wallaceburg CBC took place on Thursday, Dec. 27th. Our count
circle includes a good part of Walpole Island. 14 observers found our 3rd
highest total of 86 species (89 in 2005 is record high and 82.5 is average for
the past 10 years), 1 Count Week species and 34237 individuals (cowbird and
starling made up about 22000). Temperatures were just above freezing, with
very little snow cover and light winds. Most of the moving water was open,
still water was frozen.

New species: 1 Hoary Redpoll and Count Week Evening Grosbeaks

Record highs (4): 159 Mute Swans (124 in 2005), 1313 Canada Geese (810 in
2004), 23 Hairy Woodpeckers (20 in 1995), 8 Am. Robins (6 in 2004)

Tied Record highs (8): 1 Horned Grebe (2nd record), 1 Cackling Goose (2nd
record), 2 Surf Scoters (2nd record), 193 Bufflehead, 1 Bald Eagle, 2 N.
Saw-whet Owls (6th record), 40 Red-bellied Woodpeckers, 5 N. Shrikes

Notable Misses: Red-shouldered Hawk (2nd miss in past 8 years - 2nd year in a
row), Field Sparrow (1st miss in past 6 years), Fox Sparrow (2nd miss in past 7
years)

Other Notes: We totalled 54 Tufted Titmice (we lead Canada each year) but
found NO Northern Bobwhite for the 4th year in a row. Yellow -bellied
Sapsucker (1) was found for the 4th time, Pileated Woodpecker (1) for the 3rd
time, Chipping Sparrow (1) for the 5th time and Pine Siskin (8) for the 6th

A very special thanks to Wendy and Larry Cornelis for the fantastic meal and
the use of their home for the compilation.
