Hi everyone,
Yesterday, August 17th, we birded a number of the sewage lagoons, east of Ottawa. All lagoons had high water levels and Alfred Sewage Lagoon, was by far, the most interesting. Highlights at Alfred included, 3 juv. Red-necked Phalaropes seen from the observation tower, 1 Mute Swan (summering), 80+ Ruddy Ducks, including a few recently hatched families, 5 Redhead and 1 female with 3 young, 60+ American Coots, 6 Common Moorhen families (various sizes) and 3 Virginia Rails calling. Other sightings were numerous migrating Bobolinks flying overhead and hundreds of Tree and Barn Swallows along the telephone wires at various locations between Alfred and Casselman.
Good birding, Bruce

DIRECTIONS: From the town of Alfred go east on Highway
17, then turn south on Peat Moss Road and drive for 2 km. The lagoons are on
your left (east side of road). The birds are best observed from the viewing
tower.
Access to the viewing tower is free and no permit is needed.
Entrance to the lagoons is prohibited unless in the possession of a valid
ANNUAL PERMIT. The permit can be purchased on week days from the Alfred town
office just beside the fire station. Arrangements can also be made to
receive the permit by fax by contacting Richard Villeneuve at (613)
679-2292.
