An exciting morning of birding the west end of Ottawa was enjoyed by the
group birding today with Tony Beck.
Shirley's Bay proved very fruitful for songbirds as we encountered several
feeding flocks and many migrants.
Philadelphia Vireo was seen several times in flocks abundant with Red-eyed
Vireos.
Mixed warbler flocks produced 11 species including Blackpoll, and Tennessee.
We were also graced with great views of Canada Warbler and Northern Parula,
both species definite crowd pleasers.
From the dyke at Shirley's Bay we viewed two Great Egret feeding in the
cattails on the far west side of the bay.
We were unable to see the legs to detect any bands.
A juvenile Bald Eagle was also present in the dyke area and eventually flew
over the rifle range heading south.
Birding the quarry ponds (Burnside Pit) on Moodie Drive we saw an Adult
Lesser Black-backed Gull in breeding plumage, four Black Terns, and we
witnessed a very exciting encounter between an immature Bald Eagle and what
looked to be a first cycle Ring-billed gull struggling in it's talons.
