WESTERN KINGBIRD was the highlight of reports received August 28
through September 4 from the Niagara Frontier Region.
August 30 in Port Colborne, Ontario, a WESTERN KINGBIRD on Cement
Plant Road, south of Highway 3. The kingbird has not been re-located.
Elsewhere in Ontario, at least 17 shorebird species on the Lake Erie
shore this week. In Dunnville, numbers of BLACK-
BELLIED PLOVERS and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, and 1 WHIMBREL at the
Poth Road turf farms and Feeder Canal Road. At Rock Point Park, RUDDY
TURNSTONE, SANDERLING, WHITE-R. SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and
PECTORAL SANDPIPER. And on Cement Plant Road, a STILT SANDPIPER.
Also in Ontario, 2 REDHEADS and a MERLIN at the Mosaic Ponds north
of Rock Point, and 4 RED-HEADED WDPKRS. at Kraft Road in Fort Erie.
Highlights of migrant songbirds this week were rather thin. In a
Williamsville yard in Amherst, YELLOW-B. FLYCATCHER on two days, plus
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BAY-
BREASTED WARBLER, 5 BALTIMORE ORIOLES and PURPLE FINCH.
In the Town of Wilson, a BL.-THR. BL. WARBLER at a feeding tray on
August 30. September 1 at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, only
WILSON'S WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER. Also on the 1st, WINTER WREN at
Amherst State Park. And September 4 at Beaver Island State Park on
Grand Island, BL.-GR. GNATCATCHER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, RED-EYED VIREO,
WARBLING VIREO, CHESTNUT-S. WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, AMERICAN
REDSTART and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, plus 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 12 GREAT
EGRETS and 25 CASPIAN TERNS.
Not many COMMON NIGHTHAWKS this week - 4 over Williamsville, and
single COMMON NIGHTHAWKS in Elma and Fort Erie.
August 30, on northerly winds over the Town of Tonawanda, 3 CASPIAN
TERNS and 130 D.-CREST. CORMORANTS.
Other reports this week - in Chautauqua County, 4 BALD EAGLES at
both Saint Columbans in Sheridan and at the mouth of Silver Creek,
with 4 RED-HEADED WDPKRS. One or two BROAD-
WINGED HAWKS in an Orchard Park neighborhood where the hawks have
nested for the last five years. PEREGRINE FALCON continues to roost
atop the chimney on Winspear Avenue on the UB campus in Buffalo. In a
Silver Creek yard, 87 COMMON GRACKLES, and at a feeder in Sanborne, 20
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS.
