Much of the cloud cover was sparse in the morning with considerable cumulous building in the afternoon. Winds were moderate and at times brisk varying from the west to west-northwest. Raptor Observations: The flight today was considerably lighter than anticipated. Perhaps given the unsettled nature of the weather lately birds are still backed up on the Canadian side with another day or two of flying before they reach this area. Altogether though I think most of the onlookers today were pleased with stellar views of cavorting Bald Eagles and the fishing Osprey. I believe we saw three successful captures by Ospreys, the closest being probably not much more than 150 feet away. Non-raptor Observations: Quite a few passerine migrants were seen early in the day including good numbers of vireos, flycatchers and swallows (especially Rough-wing) , numerous Catbirds, a couple of Brown Thrashers and a few SwainsonÂ’s and Gray-cheeked Thrushes along with a nice variety of warblers. Perhaps most noticeable this year so far has been the overall lack of Monarchs. Usually by now we would have seen one or two days of large Monarch flights. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Calvin Brennan ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.smrr.net/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
