Visitors:
Again I would like to thank everyone for their help in spotting kettles
today. Your input is much appreciated.
Weather:
Generally cloudless skies were seen again today with moderate northeast
winds tending more to the east-northeast in the afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
>From almost a dead start when few birds were active, the flight exploded
rapidly into a heavy flow of birds starting at mid morning with many
tremendous masses of Broad-wings coming through. By midday we had amassed
almost 100 thousand birds! As often happens, the flight in the early
afternoon was much smaller but presumably birds were largely undetected at
altitude in the clear blue skies. This was confirmed as the afternoon wore
on as streams of birds began to be picked up again as they dropped in
altitude in mid afternoon. This afternoon push culminated in the largest
single movement of the day with over 130 thousand Broad-wings being
recorded in the 4-5pm hour alone! Wow!! Among the many Broad-wing groups,
three SwainsonÂ’s Hawks were detected along with the seasonÂ’s first
Red-shouldered Hawk. Altogether for the day 256, 163 birds of 13 species
were recorded.
Non-raptor Observations:
