Late posting,
Yesterday I saw what I "think" may have been a young Red Tail Hawk chasing after a number of squirrels at Andrew Haydon Park in Ottawa. This Hawk was so bold that it came out of nowhere and almost landed on my lap when it came down after a red squirrel I was trying to get to come over to me. The only thing which stopped it from landing on me was that it hit the garbage can in front of me. In this case both the squirrel and I got away. This Hawk was then found in a number of areas of the park but primarily on the south side of both ponds and along the green spaces in front of the east side parking lot (facing the pond) and along the left side of the playground. It was funny at times watching this bird as it would land in the same tree as two squirrels and at times it appeared as though the squirrels were daring it to attack! I am assuming this was a young Hawk due to its size and because it allowed humans to get so close before flying off. On another note, the lone Kingfisher was still quite active yesterday diving and being chased by the gulls. The lone Lesser Yellowlegs was still very active in the west pond. The GBH which has posed for many of us was not seen in the park however there was one GBH out in the river closer to the Marina. Directions: >From the east: 417 to Pinecrest off ramp > right on Pinecrest to Carling Ave. > turn left on Carling and follow to Holly Acres Rd. (first set of light west of Bayshore Dr.) >From the west: 417 to Richmond Rd / Holly Acres exit. > turn left on Holly acres and stay go straight. Holly Acres ends at the entrance to the Park. Once in the park turn right into the east parking lot. The area where this Hawk was found is located along the sidewalk and to the far left side of the parking lot. Other areas include in the trees along the south side pathways of both ponds.
