Conditions improved slowly, first some thinning of the cloud cover and a general brightening and then very gradual breakup of the clouds. Winds were moderate from the east, although upper level winds appeared to be west-northwest. Raptor Observations: The day was largely a vulture event with strong movement of this species from mid morning until the end of the day. Much of the early activity was over the lake as the birds crossed south of the count area (thus the notion that upper level winds were contrary to the surface winds) but as conditions improved in the afternoon, there were large groups going right overhead. It was among one of these late day groups that the bird of the day was noted, a Black Vulture, only the second recorded during the history of the count.
