Shortly after 11:00 this morning I visited the area on Grand Island where
the American Avocet has been seen and it is still there. It was upstream (to
the south) of the curved peninsula that is opposite the Beaver Island
Maintenance Facility at the very end of East River Rd. It was feeding among
quite a few ducks and gulls. Walk out on the south side of the peninsula and
look south where there is a large lagoon separated from the river by a
couple of small islands. It was about200 yards out. This is where I believe
Willie D'Anna saw it earlier in the week and as he noted if you want to get
a decent look you will need a scope.

I worry about this bird that doesn't seem to have a clue about migration and
is going to have no fun when all shallow areas freeze over.
