Highlights of reports received December 11 through December 18 from the Niagara Frontier Region include SLATY-BACKED GULL, CALIFORNIA GULL and AMERICAN AVOCET.

December 13 at Niagara Falls in Ontario, an adult SLATY-
BACKED GULL among several thousand gulls above the falls. There have been no additional reports since the 13th.

Also the 13th, a CALIFORNIA GULL still at the lower river power plants. Other gulls at the plants and falls, THAYER'S GULL, ICELAND GULL. L. BLACK-B. GULL and GLAUCOUS GULL. Above the falls off the Engineerium Building in Ontario, 2 PURPLE SANDPIPERS.

The AMERICAN AVOCET continued at the end of East River Road on Grand Island through December 14. On December 16, the AVOCET was relocated just over two miles away, across the river in Fort Erie, Ontario, on the river shore at Bowen Road.

Other recent Grand Island reports - KILLDEER and DUNLIN at the same East River location as the AVOCET. 78 TUNDRA SWANS and 2 TRUMPETER SWANS, including one with a wing tag, at the Beaver Island State Park beach. Three BALD EAGLES over Navy Island, viewed from the West River Parkway. And, NORTHERN SHRIKE on Grand Island again this year, on Alt Road.

The lingering RUBY-T. HUMMINGBIRD in Orchard Park was last seen on December 5.

WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS are likely still in the region, though no direct reports were received.

Winter waterfowl at Dunkirk Harbor this week included GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, CANVASBACK, REDHEAD, GREATER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, HOODED MERGANSER, COMMON MERGANSER and RED-BR. MERGANSER, plus PIED-BILLED GREBE, HORNED GREBE, 150 GREAT BLACK-B. GULLS, numbers of GREAT BLUE HERONS, and BELTED KINGFISHER.

Dial-a-Bird will not be updated until Thursday evening, January 8 of the New Year. Until then, messages will be checked and rare reports noted on the update section. My seasonal thanks to the contributors and callers who have supported Dial-a-Bird for so many years, and best wishes to all.
