Ontbirders
This afternoon, shortly after 1:00pm several observers, including Maureen Riggs
and I, simultaneously found the white Gyrfalcon on Wolfe Island. Possibly
digesting some goldeneye, it was perched on top of a tall tree on the southwest
end of Garden Island (the small island visible on the west or right as the
ferry approaches Marysville). The bird was visible from several vantage points
looking north from HW 96 (spotting scope required). At about 2:15 the Gyr
stretched its wings (wow!) and took off over the tree tops east towards the
ferry channel. We didn't see it again on the trip back to Kingston.
Directions from Marysville: turn right as soon as you get off the ferry and
proceed west for a couple of km. on HW 96. The west end of Garden Island
becomes evident as the road rises. One of the good vantage spots was by house #
667.
For ferry info from Kingston, check Margaret Bain's posting from yesterday.
