A special thanks to the Estate of David Hall-Brooks for sponsoring today as a "Day of HBMO Research" in memory of David Hall-Brooks, father of HBMO lead passerine bander Bob Hall-Brooks. Weather: Mostly clear in the morning turning to partly cloudy with a high of 17C. Winds were strong out of the SSW 15 km/hr gusting to 25. Raptor Observations: A slow, but interesting day with a fair number of Turkey Vultures getting bounced around in the winds. Otherwise a few Sharp-shins and Red-tails in the mix. The season's first Golden Eagle (juv.) was spotted by Donna Bedard at 11:54 DST as it lumbered in just over the treeline to the NE and then slowly continued west along the edge of the marsh. Non-raptor Observations: Despite the winds, a few non-raptors were moving in the morning including 19 Horned Larks, 30 Tree Swallows, 2 N. Rough-winged Swallows, 47 Black-capped Chickadees, 4 American Pipits, 55 Cedar Waxwings, and 12 Pine Siskins. Also notable were 5 Greater Yellowlegs (including the long-staying local). Predictions: Sunny with increasing cloudiness in the afternoon. Wind W becoming NW 30 km/hr gusting to 50 late in the morning with a high of 12C. A big change in weather with cooler temps. and a northerly wind component should equal a decent flight for tomorrow. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki (jmpawl...@aol.com) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
